The music that accompanies the images in this presentation is Samuel Barber's Agnus Dei, a setting by the composer himself, based on his own well-known Adagio for Strings. The choral setting is a piece that can move a listener to tears even if the meaning of the text is unknown. Its emotion is unmistakable. I consider it the one of the most beautiful works ever, and absolutely the most moving.
The recording used is that of The Choir Of Trinity College, Cambridge. It is track 4 on RCA's compilation, Barber's Adagio. It closely represents what I perceive as an ideal interpretation of the work, with a fully realized emotional apex which many published recordings lack.
Available via Barnes & Noble, and very highly recommended. |
